A guide to Hvar's wine country

H# Hvar Wine Tour Guide: The Best Wineries and Wine Regions on Hvar

Hvar is one of Croatia's best known wine islands, but its vineyards are divided into two very different wine regions. In the north lies the Stari Grad Plain, famous for indigenous white wines, while the steep southern slopes around Sveta Nedjelja produce some of Croatia's finest red wines from the Plavac Mali grape.

If you want to experience Hvar's wine culture properly, visiting both regions in a single day is well worth it. Even better if someone else is driving.

Stari Grad Plain and Hvar's White Wines

The Stari Grad Plain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's oldest continuously cultivated agricultural landscapes. Greek settlers divided the land into parcels in the 4th century BC, and the same layout is still visible today.

This is the home of Bogdanuša, Hvar's signature indigenous white grape variety. Fresh, crisp and full of citrus and mineral notes, it's the perfect match for Dalmatian seafood and Mediterranean cuisine.

Many local wineries also produce Maraština, Pošip and other traditional Dalmatian white wines, making the Stari Grad Plain an ideal destination for a relaxed morning of wine tasting among vineyards and ancient stone walls.

The South Coast and Plavac Mali

Cross to Hvar's south coast and the landscape changes dramatically. Steep vineyards cling to rocky hillsides overlooking the Adriatic, enjoying sunshine throughout the day.

The village of Sveta Nedjelja is the island's best known red wine destination. Here, the famous Plavac Mali grape produces powerful, full bodied wines with rich fruit flavours and excellent ageing potential.

You'll also find outstanding family wineries around Jelsa, Pitve, Svirče and Vrisnik, where generations of winemakers continue Hvar's long wine making tradition.

Only a few kilometres separate the Stari Grad Plain from Hvar's south coast, yet the wines couldn't be more different. Fresh, elegant whites on one side of the island and bold Mediterranean reds on the other. That's why most visitors choose to explore both in the same day.

The Best Way to Visit Hvar's Wineries

Many of Hvar's best wineries are located away from the main towns, along narrow island roads or on steep hillsides that are far more enjoyable without worrying about driving after a tasting.

Although we're primarily a private transfer service, we're happy to arrange a personalised wine tour around your chosen wineries. You decide where you'd like to visit, how long you'd like to stay and when you're ready to return.

If you're not sure where to start, we'll gladly recommend a route that combines wineries in the Stari Grad Plain with the south coast, giving you the complete Hvar wine experience in a single day.
